Most dust collection schedules get set once, by whoever commissioned the system, and then drift. Filters get changed when someone notices the gauge. The hopper gets checked after it backs up.

What should your team check on the collector every day?
Four things, every shift, in under five minutes. None of it diagnoses a problem. It tells you something changed since yesterday, which is all a daily check needs to do.
- Fan exhaust clear. Visible dust past the fan means filter integrity is gone.
- Differential pressure noted. Write it down and confirm it falls after a cleaning cycle.
- Dust drum below the line. Donaldson’s rule: keep dust 4 to 6 inches clear of the top.
- Pulses audible and even. A valve that clicks is not proof a full pulse reached the filter.
What belongs on the weekly checklist, and what has to be written down?
Weekly is where you start writing things down, and in Texas that log does more work than most plants realize.
The weekly walk
- Record the collector pressure drop. Healthy cartridge systems sit between 2 and 5 inches of water gauge.
- Inspect the hopper discharge. Rotary airlocks and screw conveyors have to turn and have to seal.
- Walk the duct runs and hoods, checking for damage, leaks, and pickups that have drifted out of position.
Why the weekly log matters in Texas
TCEQ periodic monitoring guidance for fabric filters asks you to record pressure drop weekly against a minimum and maximum band, set from your last performance test or operating history. A reading outside that band is a reportable deviation. The same guidance calls for weekly visible emissions checks from at least 15 feet away.
Dust collector maintenance in Dallas plants runs on that rhythm whether a permit requires it or not. A logged trend is what separates a real change from one odd reading.
What do you cover monthly and quarterly?
Monthly work goes to the parts nobody looks at: sensing lines, bearings, and linkages. The quarterly item is bigger because it checks whether your cleaning system reaches every row of filters or only some of them.

Have replacement cartridges, bags, and pulse components on hand before the quarterly test. Finding a split diaphragm is no use if the replacement is three weeks out.
What has to happen once a year?
Once a year somebody needs to put instruments on the system to answer the question a daily check cannot: does the collector still move the air it was built to move?
- Measure airflow at every hood and duct branch, plus static pressure across the collector, against the design figures.
- Inspect the fan and motor: rotation, bearings, belt tension, and fastener torque.
- Reset the exhaust damper to its commissioned position, because airflow drifts as filters season.
- Check capture at the source. For fume collector maintenance in Allen shops, hood position matters more than filter age.
What the rules require
OSHA does not name an interval. 29 CFR 1910.94 points to exhaust system inspection and maintenance at ANSI Z9.2 instead. NFPA 660 asks for documented inspection and records of cleaning and filter changes, with your Dust Hazard Analysis updated when the process or layout changes.
That leaves the interval to you. Whatever you settle on, airflow testing and static pressure measurement on a set schedule is what you point at when an inspector asks how you chose it.
Does the schedule change for baghouse, fume, and mist collectors?
The intervals stay roughly the same across equipment types, but the weight shifts.
Cartridge and baghouse collectors
The pulse system and the hopper carry most of the schedule. Bag units add tensioning and seating checks, because a bag that slips at the tubesheet sends fine dust to the clean side. Baghouse dust collector maintenance in Allen facilities usually turns on those checks more than on filter age.
Welding fume collectors
On fume systems the capture goes before the filters do. Check the hood position, arm articulation, and the spark arrestor quarterly. A unit can pass every pressure check while the hood sits two feet off the arc, and the welder is still breathing fume.

This is the one category where a calendar is the wrong tool. Go by run hours, not the calendar. Keep the daily and weekly checks the same, and let the pressure drop decide when filters change.
Will maintenance shut down our production line?
Some of it will. Filter changes and internal inspections need the collector locked out. Most plants fit that into a planned stoppage.
Do we need maintenance records, or is doing the work enough?
You need records. TCEQ and NFPA 660 both check what you wrote down. One sheet with the date, pressure drop, tasks done, and initials is enough.
Should we change filters on a schedule or on the gauge?
On the gauge. Use the calendar only for ordering, because some media take weeks to arrive.
We added machines this year. Does the maintenance plan change?
Check capacity first. More machines mean more load, and no schedule fixes an undersized collector. Measure airflow at the new pickups, then set the intervals.
